Alumni Pushing for Positive Change
In the summer of 2020, Alumni for Change was formed by alumni of Anchorage Christian Schools who had experienced racism from students and educators during their time in school. After seeing their former teachers’ racist responses to the murder of George Floyd, the Alumni began to take action. They publicized the numerous racist experiences of students past and present, wrote and presented legislation to Alaskan legislators, and conducted outreach to local educators and community leaders.
Private schools are not subject to the same protections afforded to public school students, and abuses often go unchecked. This leaves children vulnerable. The Alumni for Change saw the need for an organization devoted to protecting American students from racism in private schools. We are now the Black Sheep Initiative. Our goal is to fight racism in private schools—across Alaska and nationwide.
